"It is not just in Portsdown Road and Mount Pleasant where black-and-white bungalows can be found. These buildings, so called because of their white-washed walls and black timber frames, can also be seen in Sembawang.

The ones here were built by the British from the 1920s to house naval base and military personnel. They have high roofs with overhanging eaves and verandahs to reduce glare from the sun."
